Recovery
Recovery lets you get your original source back from protected files. It is a safety net for the day you lose your source, or need to change code you only have in protected form. Recovery is free for everyone and works completely offline.
How it works
Section titled “How it works”Recovery uses a keypair you create in the Vault:
| Key | Where it goes | Share it? |
|---|---|---|
| Public key | Into the Encoder, when you protect with the Recovery option | Safe to share |
| Private key | Into Recovery, to restore the source | Never share |
- When you protect, turn on Recovery and give it your recovery public key. Oxrion embeds it in every protected file.
- Later, open Recovery in Oxrion Desktop (or use
oxrion-recover), give it the matching private key and the protected files, and choose an output folder. You get the original source back.
Recovery runs on your computer; nothing is sent anywhere.
Things to know
Section titled “Things to know”- Only files protected with Recovery can be restored, and only with the private key that matches the public key used at the time. Files protected without it, or with a different key, can’t be recovered by anyone — including Oxrion.
- Keep the private key safe. If you lose it, recovery is impossible. Keep a backup of your Vault.
- You can recover a single file, a
.ziparchive, or a whole folder. Files that are not protected (images, templates, other code) can be copied along to the output, so you get the complete project back. - The output folder must be outside the input. Oxrion never writes into the files you are reading.
One key or several?
Section titled “One key or several?”You can protect everything with one recovery key, or use a separate key per client or project. It comes down to who should be able to restore the source:
- One key for all your work — the simplest. Whoever has that private key can restore every project, so it stays with you.
- A key per client — for example Agency for your own products and Client: Acme for the work you deliver to Acme. When you hand the project over, you can give Acme its recovery private key, so they can restore their own source without being able to restore anything else of yours.
Recovery keys are free; create as many as you need in the Vault. Keep track of which key you used: files can only be restored with the key they were protected with.
See Recovery in Oxrion Desktop for the step-by-step guide.
